Introduction and Objectives (NSC/Phcl 8221)

  Time:  MWF  9:10 am-10:00 am

  Place:  Moos 1-450A


This is an advanced graduate level Neuroscience and Pharmacology course intended to promote an understanding of current concepts in the neurobiology of pain and analgesia.  Lecture topics will emphasize mechanistic approaches ranging from molecular to systems levels.  The course will also include exploration of historical and contemporary issues in pain through student discussions of research literature and term paper assignments.

Assigned Readings will include original research papers, reviews, and chapters from textbooks

Student performance will be evaluated based on two to three examinations (format to be determined), student discussions, and a term paper.

The course will host a Mini-Symposium in which three prominent pain researchers will deliver public seminars.  Students will have the opportunity to interact closely with the speakers during their visit.

Registration requires permission of a course director and a permission number.
