Course Introduction and Objectives

Prerequisites: NSci3101 OR NSC5461 (concurrently ok) OR instructor consent

Nsc 5561 is intended to provide a contemporary understanding of the structure and function of neural systems forming the bases for sensation and movement, as well as sensory-motor and neural-endocrine integration.  The course is a team-taught comprehensive survey of sensory, motor, autonomic, limbic, and neuroendocrine systems.  A combination of 36 lectures, 5 discussions, and 11 laboratories will stress the relationships between structure and function.

Lectures:  MWF 10:10 to 11:00 AM in MoosT 2-580

Laboratories:  Tuesdays 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM Room MCB 3-142A

Readings:

Textbook (required):  Principles of Neural Science, fourth edition, by Kandel, Schwartz, and Jessell, 2000,available in Health Sciences Section of Bookstore in Coffman

Laboratory Atlas (required) : Neuroanatomy, Haines, 6th edition, available in Health Sciences Section of Bookstore in Coffman

Laboratory Syllabus (required) will be available for purchase in laboratory

Textbook (recommended reference) : Fundamental Neuroscience, 2nd edition. by Squire, Bloom, McConnell, Roberts, Spitzer and Zigmond, 2002, available in Health Sciences Section of Bookstore in Coffman

Examinations:

Two midterms and two quizzes held on Tuesdays in laboratory Room MCB 3-142A

Laboratory Final

Discussions:  Five to be held on lecture days

Homework:    One homework assignment per lecture

                   One assignment per Discussion
