COURSE DESCRIPTION

Registration is open for NSC 5540 - BIOMEDICAL NEUROSCIENCE.  The course dates for 2009 are August 24th to August 28th.

This course has been designed to serve any individual who has a professional interest in neuroscience but who is without a strong neuroscience background.  We hope that this course will provide the tools for engineers, managers, and others to be more comfortable and more productive when working with trained neuroscientists to complete joint projects.  We recognize that many in our target audience will need to deal with relatively advanced issues in neuroscience within the limited scope of a project and many will want a better general understanding of advanced aspects of neuroscience for the purpose of project selection and design.  Accordingly, we try to give both an intense introduction to the basics and some exposure to current research.  The advanced topics offer an opportunity to test basic understanding and also offer an interface to work here at the U.  The course includes a neuroanatomical laboratory experience that utilizes the same human materials used by our medical students.  The course is offered in a collegial atmosphere.  We aim, as much as is possible, to eliminate artificial barriers that might result from issues of jargon or discipline-specific language and we hope to foster genuine interdisciplinary interactions between faculty and students.  Grades in the course are based on a short-answer, take-home final exam.  Virtually anyone who takes the time to do the exam properly can make a good grade in the course.  (Full and active participation in the course is also required.)

NSC 5540 can be taken either as an academic course or on a fee for attendance basis without academic credit.  Non-academic attendees pay a course/lab fee of $1600 which includes all course materials and books, laboratory materials, and food for the week.  We serve a continental breakfast before class, lunch, and snacks throughout each day.  Those who take the course for credit pay tuition, in addition to the course/lab fee.  The course/lab fee is reduced for students in various U of M programs.

Categories of course attendance are explained on the next page.  Step by step instructions for registration are found on the registration form.  Contact Linda King or Dr. Dale Branton for further assistance.
